At Mama’s Kitchen:

At Mama’s Kitchen we believe that every person is entitled to the basic necessity of life — nutritious food. As a volunteer-driven, nonprofit organization, we prepare and deliver food to men, women and children who are affected by AIDS or cancer.

What We Do:

Mama’s Kitchen delivers three nutritional meals a day, seven days a week at no charge to men, women and children living with AIDS or cancer. Additionally, Mama’s Kitchen provides pantry services (Mama’s Pantry) to people affected by AIDS. Through these services, we are able to provide food, compassion and hope to over 1,500 people annually living throughout San Diego County.

History:

In 1990 volunteers from the AIDS Assistance Fund discovered that people with AIDS were dying from complications of malnutrition long before their immune systems were overcome by AIDS-related infections. Many were low-income and too ill, isolated or emotionally devastated to help themselves. Mama’s Kitchen was established as a San Diego nonprofit organization to offer nutritional support by way of a home-delivered meal service.

They also LEGALIZED ALL DRUGS, up to various amounts, for personal, recreational, and/or medical use. The result? Crime has dropped precipitously all over the country. No longer fighting an ideological war they could never match in budget and scale, they simply tossed the bad policy. The cost savings alone were able to help with MASSIVE infrastructure projects in both rural and urban areas, such as education, medicine, and clean water.

It’s yet ANOTHER, new, American day of humility when we write: hey, follow Mexico’s example!

This is going to be a significant week in marriage equality. Earlier today we saw the first gay and lesbian couples in Washington, DC receive their marriage licenses. Tomorrow comes an arguably bigger milestone when both marriage and adoption by same-sex couples become legal in Mexico City, the capital of a very religious and very conservative country. But gays are already worried that their rights might be taken away from them by the hands of the country’s politicians. The Washington Post reports:

Gay rights activist Mariana Pérez Ocaña said she fears conservative provincial leaders will chip away at same-sex marriage.

After abortion was legalized, she noted, states altered their constitutions to say life begins at conception. Governors affiliated with PAN have promised to challenge same-sex marriage.

“Many activists in gay groups fear there will be a backlash,” Pérez said.

Undoubtedly. Especially in a country whose president has gone on record to say that “the constitution of the republic speaks explicitly of marriage between a man and a woman” and the city’s Cardinal has declared same-sex marriage as a “‘perverse’ (that) measure would inflict psychological damage on ‘innocent children.’”

It is worth nothing that this is the FIRST place SOUTH of the infamous Mason-Dixon line, that used to separate the cultures of Northern America and Southern America (non-slave states and slave states, respectively), to legalize samex-sex marriage.

Brief history lesson flash!

The Missouri Compromise of 1820 created the political conditions which made the Mason-Dixon Line important to the history of slavery. It was during the Congressional debates leading up to the compromise that the term “Mason-Dixon line” was first used to designate the entire boundary between free states and slave states.
