As Christopher Hitchens said so eloquently: God is Not Great, How Religion Ruins Everything.

We are perhaps equally baffled and aghast that the for the local church that knew this was going on, didn't bother to inform the police after (at the time) Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope) had been informed of the abuse and did not so much as respond. The Archbishop could have gone to the police, but he chose not to. This institution believes that it is above the law, even when it comes down to protecting innocent children from rape and abuse.

This on the heels of another Catholic battle in Ireland over the same types of of abuses, and cover-ups.

For Catholics, the Pope is God's representative on Earth and therefore beyond being judged by anyone. We doubt that will continue to hold against this Nazi asshole, in people's minds, but in practice we doubt little will change - if anything. To remove the Pope would mean that the Vatican made a mistake, and being an extension of God, it cannot, according to its principles, admit fallibility. So, expect him to stay in his lofty position until the day he dies. Lest anyone forget, the Vatican is a sovereign country - it is NOT just a place to visit while touring Rome.

That's right, the Pope is the head of state of the Vatican. In the whole world's history, we can think of few whom have ever been caught, let alone extradited, and tried for crimes. No country is going to have the balls to go after the Vatican - though we wish they would. Perhaps someday, when this planet shakes its delusional belief in an omnipotent man who lives in the sky, or energy - whatever the hell you want to call it: crimes such as these, with evidence supporting guilt beyond the shadow of a doubt, justice will be applied to the perpetrator - whether Pope, President, Prime Minister, police officer, family member, parent, or friend.

Let the countdown for the fall of Roman Catholicism begin...tick, tock...tick,tock....
