WARNING: Graphic Video of 2009 Polk Award Winner from Iran.
The Iranian uprising after the elections for President, was followed intensely on - of all things - Twitter; as this way people could remain anonymous in submitting information, photos, & video. The country laid down a heavy hand on those who believed the elections to be stolen by the religious fundamentalists (gee, that sounds awfully familiar...). As of this writing, Iran has not released any statistics on the number of people injured and/or killed by the government in trying to quell the uprising.
To distract attention, they simply started enriching uranium to the levels required for nuclear bombs, not nuclear energy - a much lower level of enrichment is required for that. Remember when this was first supposed to be for "peaceful" urban needs? My, how the talk changes when the people rise up, and the world has its eyes on you. Still in defiance, the E.U. is planning harsh sanctions on the once democratic country. In other words, expect your gasoline bills to go even HIGHER - and stay there for as long as the religious fundamentalist, megalomania-cal, "elected" President - Mahmoud Ahmadinejad - remains in power. Read: Iraq, part 2. Read: Economy in eternal slump as we police and war in Iraq, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and possibly soon enough, Iran as well.
The footage of the death of Neda Agha-Soltan[6] (Persian: ندا آقا سلطان - Nedā Āġā Soltān; January 23rd, 1982 – June 20, 2009) drew international attention after she was killed during the 2009 Iranian election protests.[7] Her death was captured on video by bystanders and broadcast over the Internet[8] and the video became a rallying point for the reformist opposition.[8] Nedā (ندا) is a word used in Persian to mean "voice", "calling," or "divine message," and she has been referred to as the "voice of Iran."[9][10][11] She was filmed as she lay dying on the street. Her death thus became iconic in the struggle of Iranian protesters against what they said was the fraudulent election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
This shocking, graphic video won the illustrious Polk Award issued by Long Island University. It is the first time the award has been given to an anonymous submitter. The person who taped it is a political dissident and fears to share the same fate if mentioned by name.
This is what happens to people who speak out in Iran: they get killed, in public, on tape.
WARNING: THIS IS HIGHLY GRAPHIC FOOTAGE OF A POLITICAL ASSASSINATION.
