Apparently, the version of papaya that we eat is a hermaphrodite; neither the male nor female version is edible and it's impossible to tell until they have literally come to fruition. Scientists are aiding farmers by genetically re-designing papaya seeds that sprout only other hermaphrodites, as typical seeding will yield only one in four or five (a great waste of resources).
