“Mommy Dearest:” as performed by Glitz Glamour & Daisy Deadpetals.

“Mommy Dearest,” was supposed to be a harrowing film about the adopted daughter of Joan Crawford, Christina, and her brother. It was supposed to be a career defining role for Faye Dunaway after her Oscar win for “Network.” However, somewhere along the lines, Dunaway claims that the director had no clue as to what the fuck he was doing, and that in editing, they choose the weirdest, poorest performances and it became an unintentional camp classic. The abuse seems so over-the-top as to be surreal and unbelievable, though Christina swears it’s true, and her brother admits some abuse; though not at the level suffered by Christina.

Crawford’s Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, coupled with Alcoholism and Nymphomania (well documented, and even commented upon by Bette Davis, who once said: I wouldn’t piss on her if she were on fire!), created a level of perfectionism that Christina could never live up to - causing them to always fight - tooth and nail. Crawford’s adopted children were both excluded from her will, “for reasons well known to them,” which spurred Christina to write the blockbuster book, the sensationlism of which gave birth to this great, fun movie. Unfortunately for Ms. Dunaway, she was scorched by critics for her performance, and her career arguably never recovered. To this day, she refuses to talk about the film in interviews, expressly forbidding entertainment news coverage to ask more than just ONE question. It’s fair to say she hates the film, and doesn’t embrace that it became a perennially popular film, albeit not in the way she had hoped.
