Gay marriage licenses to be issued in CA beginning June 17, 2008! NY follows suit…

California will begin issuing same-sex marriage licenses beginning June 17, 2008.
And, like CA, which DOES NOT REQUIRE RESIDENCY to be wed in the state: NY Governor David Paterson instructed state agencies, including those governing insurance and health care, to immediately change policies and regulations to recognize gay marriages performed in other states. In an extraordinary measure, NY state will also recognize same-sex marriages from other countries where it is legal. Gay marriage is not legal in NY, yet, though it does issue domestic partnerships. This allows for a tidy loophole that will eventually force the issue in NY come election time, no doubt.
This has been a long time coming, 15 years since we all held our collective breath in 1993 when Hawaii nearly allowed same-sex marriages, before creating a state constitutional ban on it. The tide has turned, we hope, for the last time, and now we're waiting for the water to reach everyone's toes!
